Options for Cleaning Devices in Your School During COVID-19

by Alex Gurevich on December 29, 2020

As the new semester approaches and kids look forward to going back to school, parents are becoming increasingly concerned about their health, and rightly so. Throughout 2020 and into 2021, the coronavirus pandemic has ravaged the globe and has left many parents worried about the safety of their children when they leave home to go to school.

Those who work in schools, from teachers and staff to administration and everyone in between, have a responsibility to keep themselves and the children in their care healthy at all times. One of the best ways to do that is ensuring that all shared devices like tablets and laptops are properly cleaned. But what is the best way to do so, and what PPE could be helpful?

Alcohol or Disinfectant Wipes

Often, when people think of keeping their items and devices clean, they turn to cleaning wipes. These wipes are effective for a number of surfaces, including desks, chairs, tables, and door handles. Disinfectant wipes are a great solution to have on hand to have your kids wipe down their space at the end of class or to eliminate germs quickly during bricks.

However, these wipes are not often the best solution for electronics. It can be hard to thoroughly disinfect a computer, for example, since it's difficult and time-consuming to wipe down every single key.

Detergents and Chemicals

Another method for keeping your classroom clean is through detergents and chemicals. Again, this method is effective at killing germs on various surfaces like the floors and hallways, but it is not the best solution as far as your electronic devices, like Chromebooks and iPads..

These detergents and chemicals are often harsh, and though they can kill many of the germs that make us sick, they may also be harmful if not used properly. Additionally, they could have a negative effect on the device and cause it to stop working or, at the least, void the warranty. Even if you can find a cleaning solution that's non-toxic, it still could hurt any electronic device that you attempt to clean.

Disinfection Cabinets

Arguably the best solution for keeping your tablets, laptops, and Chromebooks clean in the classroom is a disinfection cabinet. These cabinets utilize UVC lights that kill bacteria and viruses.

Disinfection cabinets work without water or harsh chemicals. All you have to do is insert each device into its own slot within the cabinet, close the door, and turn the cabinet on. Within minutes, every device inside will be clean and disinfected thanks to effective UVC lights, ready for the next group of students to use. Many disinfection cabinets also come with charging capabilities, so you can make sure all of your devices are fully charged when your students return.

Finally, purchasing a sanitizing cabinet is far more cost-effective than continually buying wipes or detergents. Your one purchase will last for years to come, allowing you to stay on budget and have an eco-friendly solution for keeping your students and staff safe.
